Morning Assembly

on Wednesday, January 21, 2009

Each morning, the students gather in the gym to begin their day at Elmont with morning assembly. Mrs. Diederich, the principal, greets all the students and asks for the morning leader to come forward. A pre-selected student comes forward, introduces him/herself and then reads the menu for the following day. After that, he/she invites all students to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Once the students are seated, birthdays are announced and other announcements are shared with the students. Perhaps they are reminded of upcoming events, or community service projects that the school is involved in. Each month, the Topeka City of Character word of the month is shared with the students and discussed. Students are recognized for meeting individual or class goals. Sometimes, a special presentation is made by a grade level, such as the annual performance of “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Pie” at Thanksgiving by our kindergarten and 5th grade book buddies.

Morning assembly is usually less than five minutes in length, but it truly sets a positive tone for the day. It is only one way in which Elmont builds a sense of community within the building.
